The Hard and Soft Style

Goju-Ryu (剛柔流) translates literally as "hard-soft style." It combines explosive, powerful strikes with soft, circular, whip-like movements — a balance of go (hard) and ju (soft) that gives the style its name. Goju-Ryu, Goju Ryu, or Gojuryu (all correct spellings of the same style) originated in Okinawa, Japan, and carries a less militaristic approach than many mainland Japanese martial arts. The goal isn't to break students down, but to build them up — developing self-defence skills alongside calmness, discipline and confidence.

Origins and Lineage

Goju-Ryu Karate-do was founded by Master Chojun Miyagi in the early 20th century, drawing on older Okinawan fighting traditions. Today it's practised worldwide, with the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF) — founded by Master Morio Higaonna —  serving as the style's largest global governing body, with over 75,000 members across 60 countries.

How Goju-Ryu Differs

Compared with other styles and popular perceptions of karate, Goju-Ryu emphasises close-range technique, takedowns and circular blocking and redirection rather than purely linear strikes.
