Is karate dangerous?
Like all physical activity, karate carries some risk. Our instructors
work closely with every student to keep training safe. Our focus on respect in the dojo means that injuries from practice against fellow students are very rare.
What can I expect to learn?
Classes cover warm-ups, kihon (basics: strikes, blocks, footwork),
kata (forms), bunkai (applying forms for self-defence), kumite (sparring), kakie (standing grappling) and hojo undo (supplementary strength & conditioning).
Is the sparring full-contact?
No. Contact is introduced gradually and matched to age and experience.
Kids spar with no to light contact (no head contact). Teens and adults
progress to semi-contact with shin guards, gloves and mouth
guards. Full-on sparring only occurs among senior students under
instructor supervision.
What age can my child start karate?
We welcome primary school children from age 6. Younger children are
welcome to trial a class to see if they're ready.
How much do classes cost?
See our [Costs page] for current fees. We offer two free trial classes
before you commit to anything.
What should I wear to my first class?
Just comfortable, loose clothing — track pants and a T-shirt are fine.
You don't need a uniform (gi) until you decide to join.
There are many karate schools and styles.
What makes Goju-Ryu unique?
Goju-Ryu is a traditional Okinawan style blending hard, explosive
strikes with soft, circular movements. It differs from other styles
in its emphasis on close-range technique and
breathing methods. Read more on our [Our Style page].
Is karate a good fit for a shy or anxious child?
Many parents find karate builds focus, discipline and quiet confidence
over time, in a structured, supportive class environment.
Do you have lock-in contracts?
We use a 30-day cancellation notice policy — no lock-in contracts.
How do gradings work,
and how long does it take to reach black belt?
Students grade once they've met the technical requirements for their
level, along with the maturity and understanding expected at that
rank. Progress varies by student — as a guide, white to black belt
typically takes 7–10 years for children and teens, and 5–10 years for
adults.
Can parents train alongside their children?
Kids (6–12) and adults train in separate classes so everyone gets full
attention on their own level — parents are welcome to watch the kids
class. Teens and their parents can train together in the teens/adults
class.
I trained years ago — can I come back as an adult beginner?
Absolutely — many of our adult members are returning after years away, or starting fresh. All fitness levels are welcome.
Where exactly do you train, and where do I park?
We train at the Caloundra Rugby Union Community Centre, Lighthouse
Park, 81 Arthur Street, Caloundra QLD 4551. Parking is available
on-site.
