IOGKF - 4th Degree Black Belt
I was born in Namibia in southern Africa and began training martial arts when I was six years old. I was an unruly youngster and was soon asked to leave the first school I trained at! My parents then enrolled me in Goju-ryu karate and I have been training this style for twenty-five years. I have always had good teachers (Sensei) who inspire me to show others what karate can do for their mind, body and spirit. I moved to Australia in 2018 and opened Suncoast Traditional Karate in 2019.
For me, karate is like a big house with many rooms and each "room" has its own interest, for example competition, cultural practice, self-defense, physical fitness, philosophy and so on. But a house is only as strong as its foundation, and the foundation of karate must always be the values that build people up and make them good members of society, values like respect, courage, honesty and perseverance.
I have trained in four countries and competed and won national titles in Namibia, South Africa and Australia. I was part of the South African men's team that won gold at the 2010 IOGKF World Friendship Tournament (team kata and kumite division). These days my interest is on the practical application of karate for self-protection.
